Frugal tips to go to Prom

Every girls dream is to have a perfect prom dress for prom night. To us women, going to a prom are indeed a magical night for us. The preparation can be hassle and there are a lot of things that needed to be done. Hair and makeup, dress, corsage and service going to prom that will cost us hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars. The big question is that, is there a way that we can lessen the expenses for a one night event? Prom is also important to men as it is their time to prove that men can also dress to kill. If you live in a frugal way then you will be contented wearing the simplest yet sophisticated dress that you can find online or maybe in your closet. For men, it is mandatory to rent a tux because tux can’t be bought if you are not going to use it for work.

Let me help you and give you some tips on how to spend less during prom night. I am a mother and I want to share to you these frugal tips that I learned when I first experience my first prom night many years ago. Are you excited about the tips? Let us start now!

Oh wait before we start, I am going to give you a check lists in order for you to be totally prepared on your prom night and that includes for men too.

  • DIY Corsage – Why do you need a new corsage if you can do it yourself with the use of any materials that can be found at home? The cheapest corsage is $15 and believe me it is not that good looking! We all know that corsage signifies generosity and consideration to your prom date and corsage symbolizes consideration and generosity that honors the one who wears it. Doing your own corsage with whatever flower you can find in your background will suffice and add a little spark to it with glitters and ribbons. There is no harm in trying as there are a lot of tutorials online on how to do your own corsage for him or her.

  • Rent, Do not BUY – This is for the prom dress for girls and tux for men. It is not bad to buy a new prom dress and tux as long as it is not crossing your budget. If you are looking for a place to buy a new dress and tux for a very low price, you need to consider going to thrift stores instead of malls or online. Yes it is used already but we can always make it look brand new by washing it thoroughly and look for the damages if there is and fix it. Simple as that and it will now look brand new. If you want to rent, you can always check Etsy, Craigslist and eBay for gowns and tux. Make a negotiation if you can rent it for a possible friendly price only.

  • Shoes – To make your look a killer look, go to flea markets and vintage shops and look for old vintage shoes to match your dress. Buying a pair of shoe is worth is because you can always use it afterwards. For men, borrow from your dad, brother or look for a pair of shoe in the thrift shop. Just cross your finger so you can find the perfect size that fits your feet.

  • Transportation – Do you want to rent a limo for a night that will cost you around extra $100 and price may vary on the state that you live. If you own a car, borrow from your mom or dad and drive yourself going to the prom. Save money by borrowing. If you don’t want to spend your savings with the gas, ask your friends if they want to come with you and share the payment for the gasoline. Do the math guys because renting a limo will also let you pay for the driver and it is not worth it if you know how to drive.

  • After Party – Do not hesitate to ask your school if there is a sponsored after party when the prom event is done. You don’t want to spend another $100 or more so just you could enjoy the after party. If your backyard is enough to accommodate all your friends then invite them over and do a potluck. That is if there is no sponsored after party event afterwards. Having an after party is not mandatory at all so live frugally guys!

  • Hair and Makeup – Unleash the inner makeup artist in you by doing your own hair and makeup with the help of tutorial videos online! If you don’t have all the patience, you can always ask someone with experience doing it like your mom, aunt or sister. Not comfortable that they do all the work for you? Then go to malls and buy makeup from them and they will give you a free hair and makeup as long as you purchase an item from them. I know that doing your own makeup is hard especially if you are not used to wearing makeup. (Like me!) In fact, I haven’t used makeup since junior high.

  • Dinner – Go out with your friends and hang out with them. Having a meal with your closest friends is the best and you can always share the payment afterwards. Consider going to diner or buy foods and then go the park and enjoy the view of the moon. All eyes will be on you if you do that! You don’t need to go to a fancy restaurant and make reservation. Remember, we support our kids going to the prom but it has got to be your rules as a parent. Teach them the art of frugality at their very young age.
