Do you have any plans on putting up a garage sale at home? Well it may sound easy but it is hard when you have no idea on how to do it. There are some tips and tricks on how to attract people to buy your used stuff. If you will not do it the right way then no profits will be going back to you so you must be very careful on choosing what to sell. We will give you tips on how to do it the right way.
- Let the world know – It means announce that you are having a garage sale through your social media platform and in Craigslist that is near your state. I am pretty sure that the word will spread like a wildfire but make sure you have a big and colorful sign to attract people and you need to show some photos in your posts so that customers will have ideas on what you are selling. Do not hide the prices as well so people can set up their budget and make a list of the items that they want from you.
- Be specific – When it comes to stating your location make sure that you will give them the specific address and location. Some of them might not familiar with the street and state that you live right now. Most of your buyers will be the ones who just moved in and they look for new things for their new homes. Be cautious with the time and make sure that you are going to open your yard sale during weekends where they have no work and they will really spend all their time in your yard sale.
- Be open to discounts – Most of the customers will definitely ask for discounted prices from your displays. The reason they went to your yard sale is for them to save a couple of bucks when buying new things for their daily use. It is all up to you and just think of it guys, whether you like it or not, you need to agree with them for you to have sold items.
- Make a list – List all the items that you want to sell. Check all your old items and think of the things that you don’t need and give chance to others for them to use it. Display them by category and put everything in a nice clean tray. Or you can always put them all together on a table with a sign that says this is all for $5. Making it look organized and neat will attract everyone in your yard sale.
- Money Box – Do not put your money inside a box. Keep your money with you or bring a fanny pack and keep your money in there. In that way, if someone will ask for a change, you don’t have to go back to your desk and get the money for a change. It is safe too! You might not know but what if there is a bad guy who will go for your money box instead of your items that are in display.
- Free Drinks – To make it a little interesting, offer free drinks to your customers like lemonades! The more you give them treats, the more the good news will spread like a wildfire. All of them will be encouraged and will probably go to your yard sale and as a host; you must be very friendly as possible.
- Bulk Item Discount – Offer discounts to your customers who will buy 5 items or more especially on clothes. The more you can get rid of those shirts, the better. We all know that shirts are the number 1 best sellers of all garage sales all around the world.
- Auction – Do you have something that is worth more money? Like antique paintings and vintage items. Put them up for auction if everyone else is finish with the shopping in your yard. Well it really depends on you if you are going to sell it or not but make sure that it is legit if it is a vintage painting. You don’t have to hire an auctioneer; you can always do the auction by yourself. If the item is very rare, the more money you can get from it.
- Make a limit – Guys, you don’t have to be cheap when it comes to large appliances like televisions, refrigerators, couch and many to mention. If you bought them for $500, make sure you sell them and you can make a profit out of it for at least 25% of the original price. If it is in good condition and with box and warranty, the higher the price it should be.
- Plan everything – Before deciding on what day you want to do your yard sale, always check the weather forecast. You don’t want to do the yard sale on rainy day! I know that we can’t really rely on the weather forecast but if it rains, make mini tent outside just in case it might rain. No rain will stop you from getting a profit!
- Be approachable – Greet everyone who comes in! Show them the way and do the sales talk! Do not be afraid to interact with your customers. Remember, without them, you will have no profit at all. A little tour around your items will not cost you!
- Visible – Make sure that your yard sale is visible on the road. In that way, all the by passer will be curious and will probably drop by and see what is inside your yard sale. Remember; do not let anyone go inside your house under any circumstances. If you have kids, keep an eye for them guys. I know you will be very busy and do not forget that you have kids too!
At the end of the day, if all your items are not sold and you still want to get rid of them, post it in Craigslist and put a caption “YARD SALE LEFTOVERS – FREE” and make a time limit to it. If it is not gone by this time around, you better donate it to the charity! Do not forget to remove the sign afterwards! Clean all the mess and be thankful to those who participated in your yard sale. I really hope that your garage sale will be successful like mine!
